Choose the person and schedule, not the service label. Ask who will actually attend, how much time they spend with the pet, what other bookings surround yours and who replaces them if they are ill. A polished company page cannot answer whether the assigned caregiver and route suit this pet.
Compare one ordinary Tuesday
Give each candidate the same address, time need and care list. Ask for the arrival window, hands-on time, travel or pickup time, update and expected total. Then test the routine against work, building access and the pet’s normal day.
Use a meet-and-greet for questions, then a short trial for evidence. A good result includes reliable entry, the agreed care, a useful report and secure lock-up—not simply a cheerful photograph.
Private, group or transported
A private walk offers one dog the handler’s attention. A group walk adds dog matching and may include vehicle time. Ask how many minutes are active walking versus pickup and drop-off. If off-leash exercise is proposed, name the park and check its current hours and boundaries.
Decide between private, group and transported walks
A private neighbourhood walk can give one dog the handler’s attention and avoids collection time. A group walk may offer compatible dog company. A transported group can reach larger parks, but the dog may spend extra time in a vehicle while others are collected. None is automatically better. Ask where the paid clock begins and how many minutes are active walking.
Suppose Walker A charges less for a 60-minute group outing, but pickup, other collections and return keep the dog away for two and a half hours. Walker B charges more for 45 minutes from the apartment door. A dog that enjoys the vehicle and group may prefer A. A dog that becomes carsick or needs a predictable toilet break may receive more useful care from B. Compare the day the dog experiences, not the package name.
Check the actual route
Ask which streets or park the walker normally uses from your address and what replaces that route in heat, smoke, ice or construction. If off-leash exercise is proposed, the owner should approve it explicitly. Vancouver’s designated off-leash etiquette includes a maximum of three dogs per handler and leashes on entry and exit; that municipal rule does not tell you how a business matches dogs or handles a recall failure.
Ask how dogs join a group, what behaviour ends a group trial and where a dog waits during pickup. A useful answer covers size, play style, fear, vehicle comfort and individual history. “We match by temperament” needs an example.
Meet the person who will walk the dog
Find out whether the person at the consultation is the assigned walker. Ask who attends when that person is ill and whether you approve a substitute before home access is shared. Walk one block together. Watch how the person clips equipment, leaves the building, gives the dog time to sniff and responds to a distraction.
Choose after a short paid trial. Review punctuality, actual time outside, route, dog handling, report and lock-up. A walker can be warm and capable yet still be the wrong fit for this building, schedule or dog.
Compare a month, not an introductory price
Request the regular dog-walking price after any trial offer and multiply it by the actual weekly frequency. Add only fees that apply to your address and schedule. Then consider the cost of a missed or shortened service under the terms. A cheaper walker whose arrival window cannot cover the dog’s needed break is not a substitute for a more precise booking.
